Questions you should ask your contractor:

How long have you been in business?
Although experience doesn't mean you will receive a quality product, a company that has a proven track record is always more attractive.

Are you licensed?
A reputable contractor will always have a construction license. It is impossible to obtain a building permit without one.

Are you insured?
A Certificate of Insurance should be obtained, directly from the carrier, prior to any work being started. General liability is essential for every contractor to maintain. The coverage limits vary by industry and the type of work each contractor performs. The minimum limits for your project should be commensurate to the value of the structure being constructed or improved and the associated risks. Workers Compensation is required for all companies that have employees. If your contractor has employees, you must verify it is included in their policy to protect you and the employees from bearing the cost of injuries that could occur.

What type of warranty do you offer?
Most competent contractors offer a one year warranty, or more, on their labor and follow the manufacturers' specifications for material warranties. Beware of warranties, either expressed or implied, that sound too good to be true. Such as "lifetime" warranties. Or, extending the material manufacturers warranty for a much longer period of time.

Are you in good standing with the Better Business Bureau?
Check with the BBB to verify their affiliation and their compliant resolution status. This does not mean they do not have problems. It merely allows you to verify they do not have any unresolved customer complaints.

For home owners, do you have a Home Improvement Contractor I.D. number?
In the state of Massachusetts, a Home Improvement Contractor I.D. Registration is required by the state to do any work on an existing home.

Do you have any testimonials and or references?
Ask to see any testimonials or possible references to call.
